Bio

Anchorage Daily News March 30, 1988 A gathering of family and friends of Evelyn F. Kucera Phelps, owner of Capitol Glass Company, was held in Anchorage. Mrs. Phelps died Monday, March 28, at her Anchorage home following a brief illness. Born Sept. 9, 1923, and raised in Deweese, Neb., she briefly taught in a oneroom schoolhouse there. She served in the Women's Army Corps during WWII and taught ballroom dancing in Seattle, before moving to Alaska in the early 1950s with her husband, William J. Phelps. They homesteaded on the Kenai Peninsula and Mrs. Phelps helped her husband start Capitol Glass Company in Anchorage. Since her husband's death in 1970, she has been owner and president of the Capitol Glass Company. She volunteered time to the Alaska Handicapped Children's Program and the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce. She was also an active board member of the Alaska Zoo. She leaves her daughter Deborah Byersdorder, of Issaquah, Wash.; her sons, Byron and Larry, both of Anchorage; her brothers, Ed Kucera, of Scappoose, Ore., and Ted Kucera, of Red Cloud, Neb.; her sisters, Rose Aksamit, of Deweese, Neb., and Marian Hope, of Denver, Colo.; and six grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to the Alaska Handicapped Children's Program, 1231 Gambell St., Suite 302, Anchorage 99501, or to the Alaska Zoo, 4731 O'Malley Road, Anchorage 99516. Arrangements were by Evergreen Memorial Chapel.
