Joseph Don Carlos Young Final tribute was paid to the memory of Joseph Don Carlos Young, 83, former L. D. S. church architect and last surviving son of Brigham Young at funeral services conducted Sunday at 2 30 p. m. in the Ensign L. D. S. Ward Chapel. Speakers at the services were George D. Pyper, superintendent of the Deseret Sunday School Union; J. Reuben Clark Jr., first counselor in the first presidency of the LDS church and Dr Levi Edgar Young, a member of the First Council of the Seventies in the church. Mr. Young died in a local hospital Wednesday night after a long illness. Salt Lake Telegram Monday, Oct. 24, 1938 transcribed by Rhonda Holton ------------------ Joseph Don Carlos Young Veteran Architect Passes A rather reticent and dignified old gentleman, who seemed to be a better listener than talker, was Joseph Don Carlos Young, the last of 26 sons born to the founder of this commonwealth. He was an architect of practical ideas and artistic talent who designed many structures of merit in the city of his nativity. Had he done nothing else, the imposing church office building of classic contours and solid simplicity, located on East South Temple Street, will stand through many generations as a testimonial to his genius and a monument to his memory. Don Carlos, as he was known to intimate friends and associates, sought neither fame nor fortune, neither official title nor popular acclaim; in a quiet but earnest way he served his church and did his humble part in the community. With Ecclesiastes, the preacher, he might have expressed his ambition in these words: "Remove far from me vanity and lies; give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me." He lived to see, in the lessening distance ahead, the 84th milestone of his long and uneventful journey through life, but he was weary and lay down to await the inevitable end, which came slowly after a lingering illness. Oct. 20 — Utah today mourned the death of Joseph Don Carlos Young, 83, the last of 26 sons of their most noted Patriarch, Brigham Young. Joseph Young died last night in a local hospital after a long illness. He was an architect of te Latter-Day Saints church for 50 years. His famous father, who succeeded to the church presidency upon the death of Founder Joseph Smith, led the Mormon immigration to Utah in 1847. Between 1824 and 1868 Brigham Young took 27 wives, 16 of whom bore him a total of 56 children, 4 of the 30 daughters are still living. The patriarch died Aug. 29, 1877, at the age of 76. The Evening Herald Thursday, Oct. 20, 1938 transcribed by Rhonda Holton --------------- Joseph Don Carlos, 83, died in the LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah of cancer of the colon, an enlarged heart and edema of the lungs at 10:10 p.m. His residence was 285 10th Ave. Salt Lake City, Utah. His occupation was an Architectural Engineer until he retired in 1935. He had worked for 56 years. He was the son of Emily Dow Partridge Young and Brigham Young. Interment was made in the Salt Lake City Cemetery. Larkin Mortuary Company handled the funeral arrangements. He married Marian Penelope January 11, 1887 in Juarez, Mexico. He married Alice Naomi Dowden September 22, 1881 in Salt Lake City, Utah. -death certificate
