From The Columbus Telegram, December 27, 1972, p. 7, transcribed by Linda Berney: Miss Mary E. (Polly) Welch, 99, of Rt. 1, Columbus, died this morning in Behlen Community Hospital. She was a former teacher in Platte and Colfax Counties for 50 years, retiring in 1947. Daughter of the late Henry and Margaret Pilling Welch, she was born June 11, 1873 in Colfax County, and spent her lifetime in Colfax and Platte Counties. She attended school at Colfax District 8, Columbus High and Fremont Normal. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Friendly Neighbors and Nebraska Retired Teachers Association. Miss Welch reared these persons: Mrs. Charles (Esther) Heibel, Mrs. Arthur (Birdie) Ahrens and Mrs. Calvin (Mattie) Gertsch. In recent years she made her home with Mrs. Ahrens. Also surviving is one sister, Mrs. Albert (Stella) Korth of Bennett, Colo. She was preceded in death by brothers, Charles and Robert of Richland and sister, Mrs. Louis (Tillie) Voss of Fremont.
