The Malakoff News Jan. 6, 1961 Death Claims Mrs. Mettie Shumate, 82; Service Held Sunday Mrs. Mettie Beatrice Shumate, 81, longtime resident of this community, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. L. L. Vieregge here at 7:15 a.m. Saturday. She had been in failing health for the past several years. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the First Baptist Church, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. Byron Orand. Interment, under the direction of the Carroll & Lehr Funeral Home, was in the Malakoff Cemetery. Born in 1879 near, what is now known as Crescent Heights, she would have reached her 82nd birthday next August 31st. She was a member of the First Baptist Church. Surviving are three sons, Calvin, Chester and John Shumate, all of Malakoff, one daughter, Mrs. L. L. Vieregge, also of Malakoff; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were, Doyle Shumate, Chester Shumate, Lewis Vieregge, Joe Monroe, Reagan Griffin, Barneal Wright, Henry Beaird and Bill Beaird. Out-of-town relatives and friends attending the last rites were, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Beaird and Mrs. C. L. Kuhn of Marshall; Mr. and Mrs. Waldon Beaird, and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Beaird of Dallas; William Beaird, Athens; Henry Beaird Jr., Waco; Mr. and Mrs. O. M. Fuller, Blooming Grove; Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Sears and daughter, Dallas; Mr. and Mrs. R. O. Wright and son, Athens; Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Wright, Kerens; Rufus Beaird, and Mr. and Mrs. Finley, Corsicana; Mr. and Mrs. Reagan Griffin, Dallas; Roy and Toy Wardell, Palestine; Walton and Bernice Young, Mrs. Arzilla Hughes, and D. T. Griffin, Athens and Mrs. Ella Dukes, Dallas.
