George Herbert Carleton was born in Utica, Missouri to Rev. Israel Carelton and Phebe Miller Carleton. He was one of eight children, an infant who died at birth, sisters, Maud M., Olive, Jessie L., and brothers, Blondell C., Earl R. and Edmund F. Carleton. George H. Carleton married Elva Jane Wheeler on March 5, 1910 in Merrill, Oregon. Elva Jane was originally from Lebanon, Oregon. They had met when they were young children and had been playmates. Elva moved to Merrill to marry her young beau and to start their life on his newly purchased farm. Elva and George had only one child, a son. Alfred Chapman Carleton was born on his family farm on Christmas Day, 1910. George and Elva raised hay, sheep and horses on their 80 acre farm and Elva worked in town as a nurse for Dr. Patterson. They stayed in Merrill and worked their land for the rest of their lives. Geoge and Elva both died on their beloved farm of heart attacks. Elva died on May 25, 1941 and George died on March 5, 1954, leaving the property to the only heir, their son Alfred. Merrill Centennial Book 1894-1994 Submitted by Jeanie Sawyer
