Bio

GALVESTON, TX — Mary Jane Cernosek, 76, of Galveston, Texas, died on Thursday, November 6, 2025, following a prolonged illness. She was born on March 2, 1949, to Anton B. Cernosek and Mary Kossa Cernosek in Galveston, Texas. Mary Jane graduated from Ball High School in 1967. As a Vocational Education student, she began working as a telephone operator at Southwestern Bell at age 16. She retired as an AT&T employee in 2014, after 48 years of service. Mary Jane never met a stranger. She opened her heart to everyone, treating new acquaintances as friends, treating friends as though they were family, and treating family with unconditional love. She was a devoted daughter who selflessly cared for her aging parents. She was a wonderful little sister who enjoyed traveling with Barbara, watching sports with Tony and having lunch with Johnnie. And she loved her role as an aunt, babysitting her nephews, and helping care for and playing with her great nieces and nephews. She never forgot their birthdays, showering them with gifts as well as cash equal to their age tucked inside a carefully selected birthday card. Mary Jane was kind, compassionate, and generous. She was a devout Catholic and believed in social justice for all and treating everyone with dignity and respect. Her charitable contributions were directed toward organizations that reflected these values. She was preceded in death by her parents, Anton B. Cernosek and Mary V. Kossa Cernosek, and her brother Johnnie J. Cernosek. She is survived by her sister, Sr. Barbara Ann Cernosek O.P., her brother Anton E. Cernosek (Marilyn), her nephews Brian Cernosek (Lisa), Aaron Cernosek (Clarissa), Nathan Cernosek (Jessica), David Cernosek (Courtney), and seven great nieces and nephews: Luca, Andrew, Nilo, Quinn, Ruma, Lucia and Tommy. She is also survived by numerous friends and relatives whom she loved dearly. Mary Jane's family will receive visitors beginning at 5:00 pm, Friday, November 21, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home, 3028 Broadway, in Galveston. A rosary will begin at 6:00 pm, and friends and family are invited to share memories of Mary Jane following the rosary. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 AM Saturday, November 22, at Sacred Heart Church, 1302 Broadway, in Galveston. Burial will follow at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery, 7801 Gulf Freeway, in Dickinson. Her nephews and great nieces and nephews will serve as pallbearers. The family wants to thank her pulmonary rehab specialist, Metrice Holmes, the staff at Tuscany Village Skilled Nursing and the aides from Friendly Faces Senior Care for their loving care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dominican Sisters of Houston or the charity of your choice. Galveston Daily News November 18, 2025
