Bio

VETERAN - KOREAN WAR U.S. NAVY Daniel Joe Leshikar Sr. of Battle Mountain, 73, died Thursday July 17th, following a battle with colon cancer. Dan was born October 21st, 1934 in Taylor, Texas. He grew up in New Mexico and was a 1953 graduate of Deming High School. He spent 4 years in the U.S. Navy (Seabees) and was a Veteran of the Korean War. He was also a member of the Blue Lodge Masons for 45 years. Dan had resided in Battle Mountain since 1969 and worked as a heavy equipment operator at Duval, Cortez, FMC, Gold Fields and Marigold mines during his mining career. He raised his family in Battle Mountain and in his younger years enjoyed hunting and fishing. He enjoyed gardening as well, and took great joy in his family. He was an outspoken man who stood up for what he believed in and often wrote letters to the newspapers voicing his concerns. Dan believed in and fought for the Rock Creek Dam, but never saw his dream come true of having a place near by for our residents to fish. It was his belief that the failure to build the dam was the biggest mistake ever made by Lander County. He was a loving husband, father, grand father, great-grand father and friend and will be missed dearly by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Margaret (Sharkey) Leshikar, daughters Joyce (Marvin) Sondermann of Battle Mountain, Danna (Lynn) Sadler of Coalville, Utah, Lori (Dale) Taliaferro of Winnemucca and Shelley (Jose) Gavino of Vail, Arizona, sons Frank Anderson of Fallon and Danny Leshikar Jr. (Sandi) of Liberty, Missouri, sister Lois Cole of Hoodsport, Washington, 9 grand children and 10 great-grand children as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Joe Leshikar, mother Isabel (Adamek) Michalski, brothers Eugene and Erwin Leshikar and grand daughter Niki Sondermann. Services will be at 10 AM Tuesday July 22nd at the BM Civic Center with burial following at the BM Cemetery.
