Bio

Private, Company A, 28th Regiment, Texas Cavalry, CSA Son of Francis and Mary Bounds Husband of Mary L. Bounds Thomas Bounds, 21, is listed in Panola County in 1850, with Frances Bounds, 50; Mary Bounds, 50, born in Virginia; Jefferson Bounds, 13; and Hardina[?] T. Bounds, 11. Thomas Bounds married Mary L Carroll on October 1, 1851, in Caddo Parish, Louisiana. The couple had moved to Texas by January 6, 1857, when daughter Susan was born there. Little Susannah lived only 7 months, dying on August 24, 1857. In the 1860 federal census Thomas Bounds, 31, and wife Mary, 30, are listed at Grahams Mill, Shelby County, with children Lafayett, 8; Frances, 4; Susan, 3; Jane, 2; J. H. 4 months; Napoleon Bounds, 14; and Lafayett Bounds, 12. Living nearby were Joel Bounds, 30, and his family; and Peter Bounds, 24, and his family. Thomas Bounds had 25 acres improved, where he grew mostly Indian corn, as well as 160 acres unimproved. His farm was valued at $250, and his farming equipment, etc, at $25. He had 1 horse, 4 milk cows, 10 other cattle, and 20 swine, all valued at $200. Thomas R Bounds enlisted as a private in the Confederate army at Shelbyville, Texas, on June 8, 1863, and was assigned to transport cotton from Shelby County to Navasota using his own wagon and team. In May 1865 he requested leave to return home to help his wife and children harvest their corn crop. The couple then had nine children, and his wife was ill and expecting another child in July. While home he too became ill and died from pneumonia on June 28, 1865. Daughter Isadore Josaphene Bounds was born July 22. Biography compiled by Sheron Smith-Savage.
