Wife of Thomas R. Bounds, who served in Company A, 28th Regiment, Texas Cavalry, CSA Mary L Carroll married Thomas Bounds on October 1, 1851, in Caddo Parish, Louisiana. In the 1860 federal census Thomas Bounds, 31, and wife Mary, 30, are listed at Grahams Mill, Shelby County, Texas, with children Lafayett, 8; Frances, 4; Susan, 3; Jane, 2; J. Thomas R Bounds enlisted in the Confederate army in 1863. In May 1865 he was given leave to return home to help his wife and children with their corn crop, and to help his wife, who was pregnant and ill. While home Thomas too became ill and died of pneumonia on June 28, 1865. Mary Lou gave birth to daughter Josaphene Bounds on July 22. After Thomas's death, Lafitte Bibb Bounds, oldest child and only son of Thomas and Mary Lou, became responsible for helping his mother farm and raise the younger children. He married in 1874, and in 1880, Lourana Bounds, 52, was living in Shelby County with daughters Allace G, 20; Mary E, 18; Martha L, 16; and Isadore, 14. In her widow's application for a Confederate pension, dated July 18, 1899, Mary Lou stated she was partially blind and was so crippled that she had not walked for 3 years.
