Bio

Iola Parks-Nelson, age 99, of Sioux Falls, died Wednesday, February 10, 2010 at Avera Prince of Peace Nursing Home. She died peacefully in the arms of her family. Iola was born to Frank and Caddie Percy on their farm near Ethan, SD on May 23, 1910. As a child, Iola traveled with her parents, both Ordained Ministers of the Nazarene Church and attended several schools in Illinois, Texas, Kansas and Washington State before moving with her parents and brother Oran to Sioux Falls in 1924 where she graduated from Washington High School and Nettleton College. In 1927, Iola was married to Ervin Parks and worked many years as a secretary and bookkeeper enjoying her marriage and the four children they raised. Ervin passed away in 1971 and in 1973 Iola was married to Melvin Nelson. She enjoyed swimming, playing the piano and bowling and her home and gardening until she was 98 years old. She loved to play cards and enjoyed many good times with her friends and family over the years, many of those years spent at her and Melvin's summer home on Big Stone Lake, making friends and fishing and sharing their home with their family. Melvin passed away in 1982. Iola was preceded in death by her two husbands and one son, Lorin E. Parks and is survived by her brother, Oran of San Antonio, Texas, her daughter in law Lynn (Lorin) Parks of Sioux Falls, two sons, Leroy (Ruth) Parks of Foley, Alabama, Lyle (Margie) Parks of Sioux Falls, SD, one daughter Yvonne (Herb) Loell of Elko, Nevada, and three step daughters from her marriage to Melvin Nelson; Patricia Buechler, Phyllis Neuroth and Charlene Streif. She will be greatly missed by her friends and family which includes 15 grandchildren, 34 great grand children and 15 great great grandchildren. Funeral Services will be 1:00 pm, Monday at First Baptist Church, with interment at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Visitation begins at 1:00 Sunday with the family present to greet friends from 2:00 to 4:00 Sunday afternoon at Miller Funeral home, 13th and Main Avenue
