Joe Stephens, 72, of Lubbock, passed away on Monday, July 28, 2008. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 30 at Calvary Baptist Church, with Dr. Richard Rush officiating. Interment will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park. Joe Neil Stephens was born March 21, 1936, in Lamesa, to Bert and Mabel (Jones) Stephens, and grew up in the Lamesa area. He graduated from Lamesa High School in 1953 and attended Texas Tech University for four years. Joe and Shirley Pearson were married on Aug. 12, 1954, in Carlsbad, N.M. She preceded him in death on Oct. 5, 2000. He spent 33 and 1/2 years with Fireman's Fund Insurance Company as a claims manager, retiring in 1995. During his retirement, Joe was very active with Calvary Baptist Church in the Pillow Ministry, the Coffeepot Crew, and serving as a van driver. He loved spending time woodworking, fishing and playing with his grandsons. Joe is survived by his son, Kevin Stephens and wife Shonda, of Anton; grandsons, Austin and Landon Stephens; sister, Helen Vandivere of Lamesa; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his parents.
