Obituary: "If Heaven has baseball, Erchel is sitting in a box seat." Erchel Edward Sluss departed this life on Monday, November 19, 2018, after an illness. Erchel was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Doris Sluss; and a half-brother, Brian Sluss. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Glenda Rose Sluss; his children, Hannah (Sluss) Walker (Richard) of Saline, MI, and Chad Sluss, of Coeburn; brother Curtis Sluss (Edith) of Coeburn; sisters Shelby Kilgore (Charles "Randy") of Bristol, TN, and Crystal Stallard (Jack) of Church Hill, TN; several nieces and nephews; and his Jack Russell terrier, Jack. He was like a father to many, especially to nieces Carolyn Archer of Wise, and Kathleen (Damron) Chisenhall of Coeburn. He attended Rural Missionary Baptist Church of Coeburn. Erchel graduated from Dungannon High School in 1955 and was known for his curve ball when he pitched for local baseball teams. He attended Clinch Valley College and served in the Army at Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks, Alaska. In 1963 he moved with his bride to Rogersville, TN, where he was a member of East Rogersville Baptist Church. He led a Boy Scout troop and was employed by AFG Glass Plant. After returning to Coeburn in 1972 he worked for Paramount Coal Company and coached Little League baseball for the Flatwoods Hornets. He retired from Flatwoods Job Corps in 2000. The family will receive friends Monday, November 26, 2018 5 P.M. to 7 P.M. at the Sturgill Funeral Home 310 6th Street NW Coeburn, VA. Funeral Services will be conducted 11 A.M. Tuesday, November 27, 2018 in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Willie Ratliff officiating Burial will follow in the Greenwood Acres Cemetery Coeburn, VA.
