Bio
Seventh child of ISAAC and ELIZABETH HEARNE PARKER ECORD . He lived on the family farm and attended the nearby school. He joined the Army Dec. 26, 1863 at Cincinnati, Ohio. It is thought that he joined the Army there as a volunteer to pursue a Confederate Detachment that made a raid across his home. James was sent to the 61st with his brother Ed in Hooker's Corps and was in the campaign against Atlanta. His service in the Army did not last long, however. He was severely wounded by a gunshot in the right thigh on Aug. 31, 1864. James spent the remainder of the war in a hospital and was discharged May 30, 1865. James moved West with the family and tried to farm, but found that walking and heavy work was too much for the injured leg. It did not bother him though, on horseback, so he became a cowboy and worked on ranches all over the Southwest. In later years his skill with a cutting horse got him a job in the sorting pens in the Kansas City stockyards. He finally retired to the Wadsworth Veteran's Home near Leavenworth, Kansas and that is where he died.
