From the Triumph-Monterey Progress, June 13, 1935: G. UMHOEFER DIES SUDDENLY G. Umhoefer, 72 years old and a resident of Triumph for the past twenty-five years, passed suddenly away at his home this Wednesday evening [June 12] at about six o'clock, of heart failure. Mr. Umhoefer had been in apparently as good health as usual and only this afternoon went with his daughter, Mrs. Beatrice Stockdill, to Fairmont on business. He and Mrs. Umhoefer were invited to the James Meehan home this Wednesday evening for six o'clock dinner and deceased had dressed for the occasion, and seated himself in a rocker on the front porch to wait until Mrs. Umhoefer was ready to go. When Mrs. Umhoefer was ready to depart she went to the porch where she found her husband dead in his chair. Indications are that he passed away very peacefully. Besides his widow Mr. Umhoefer leaves four children to mourn his passing, namely Mrs. Grover Linden at Sioux City, lowa; Clifford and Mrs. Beatrice Stockdill of this village; and Bernard at Mason City, lowa. One son, Albert, preceded his father in death in 1918. Mr. Umhoefer had been in the hardware business in Triumph for the past twenty-five years and was always active in enterprises for the betterment of the community. He held the highest esteem and respect of all who knew him. His departure is a severe shock, not only to the bereaved family, but to the community as a whole. From the Triumph-Monterey Progress, June 20, 1935: GREGORY UMHOEFER RITES AT SHERBURN SATURDAY MORNING Remains of Triumph Business Man Laid To Rest in St. Luke's Cemetery Funeral services were conducted Saturday morning at 9 o'clock from St. Luke's Catholic church at Sherburn for Gregory Umhoefer, who passed away at his home in Triumph last Wednesday evening from heart failure. Rev. Fr. Krebsbach officiated. Interment was made in St. Luke's cemetery at Sherburn. The pall bearers were James Meehan, Harry Sheppard, L. A. O. Stockdill, Peter Reding, Leo Hogan and T. P. Laingen. Those from out of town attending the last sad rites were Joe, Leroy and Mayme Umhoefer and Mrs. James Bernard of Anthon, lowa; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Umhoefer and children Leo, Edward, and Eva, of Adrian, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Umhoefer, Mrs. Will Gacke, and Wm. Richter of Anthon, lowa; Mrs. Rose Murphy and children Eldora, Nicholas and Eva of Hull, lowa; Miss Clara Gacke, Agnes Gacke, Veronica Gacke and Gregory Gacke of Hull, lowa; Ben Gacke and daughter Mary of Larchwood, la.; Mr. and Mrs. Martin Gacke of Alvord, lowa; Mr. and Mrs. John O'Connor of Dell Rapids, South Dakota; Mr. and Mrs. Peter De Smet and daughter Leon [Leona?] of Hudson, South Dakota; Mrs. Olive Linden, Mr. and Mrs. Valois Linden, Mr. and Mrs. Bayne Linden and William Kramer all of Sioux City, lowa; Mr. and Mrs. Ed Pinns and children of Minneapolis; Mr. John A. Pins of LeMars, lowa; Mr. and Mrs. James Long and Mrs. Elma Howe of St. James; Mr. and Mrs. T. P. Laingen, Mr. and Mrs. Palmer Laingen, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Laingen and Mr. Melvin Laingen all of Odin. Gregory Umhoefer was born at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, April 5, 1863. He moved to Cherokee, lowa, March 19, 1873, and to Alton, lowa where he engaged in the carpenter trade, in March, 1884. He was united in marriage to Emma Schnee in 1888, at Alton, lowa, and to this union two children were born, a daughter, Olive, and a son, Albert. In 1890 he moved to Alvord, lowa, where he and his brother, Joe, operated a general store. Mrs. Umhoefer died of pneumonia in 1895. On April 26, 1898, he was married to Mary Gacke at Hull, lowa, and to this union four children were born, Clifford, Joseph (who died at birth), Beatrice and Bernard. He moved with his family to Marshal, Minnesota in June, 1906, where he again worked at the carpenter trade. From there he moved to LeMars, lowa, where he and his brother, Joe, operated a glove factory. In 1910 he came to Triumph where he went into the hardware business where he stayed until his death at the age of 72 years, 2 months and 7 days. He was preceded in death by his son, Albert, October 29, 1918. He leaves to mourn his passing his widow, a daughter, Mrs. Olive Linden, Sioux City, lowa, Clifford and Beatrice of Triumph and Bernard at Mason City, lowa; three brothers, Joe at Anthon, lowa, Frank at Adrian, Minn., and John at Los Angeles, Cal. He also leaves seven grandsons and one great grandson.
