Bio
Sudden Death Mrs. Anna Marie Umhoefer died at her home in Alton Thursday morning at eight-thirty. She ate supper as usual the night before and went to bed but complained of not feeling well along about two o'clock in the morning. She fell asleep however and slept till morning. Her son-in-law John Pins was in the house alone with her--his wife being in Sioux City and the children at St. Mary's school. John went to her room about seven to see how she was feeling and found her breathing regularly and to all appearances enjoying a healthful sleep. It being her custom to rise early John went to her room again about eight and noted that her breathing had become labored. He rushed out of the house to get someone to summon a doctor. Mike Haupert was near by and went in. He was followed a few moments later by John Homan. She was then gasping for breath and died a few moments later before medical aid reached her. Deceased was born Anna Marie Grode at Darmstadt on the Rhine March seventeenth 1832. She was therefore seventy-four years old the seventeenth of last March. She came to America over half a century ago and was married to Joseph Umhoefer at Fussville, Wisconsin November fifteenth 1855. With her husband she moved to Cherokee many years ago and in 1884 came to Alton. On the fifteenth of last November they celebrated their golden wedding. On the eighteenth of last February Joseph Umhoefer died. The void left in the life of Mrs. Umhoefer was one that could never be filled. After fifty years of life together the separation was one not to be long survived and the esteemed lady died practically of a broken heart--though she suffered a slight stroke of paralysis shortly after her husband's death. All the children are present for the funeral which is to be held Saturday morning at nine. The children are Andrew of Sioux City; Joseph and Gregg of Alvord; John and Frank of Adrian, Minnesota and Mrs. John (Appolonia) Pins of Alton. There were also present Peter Beagler and Mrs. Peter Beagle and her father Theodore Umhoefer from Cherokee.
