Gladys H. Shimek Hoelscher went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, April 5, 2025. She was born on April 11, 1935, to Fredrich and Frances Kobza Shimek in Schulenburg. Gladys graduated in 1954 from Schulenburg High School. She worked at Schulenburg Medical Associates before meeting her life partner, Leo H. Hoelscher. They were married on May 10, 1958, in Praha. After a short time in Seguin, Gladys and Leo made their home in Weimar. Gladys, despite her own dreams as a young woman, spent her entire life taking care of loved ones. She went from being the oldest girl in a farming family of 12 children to taking care of six children of her own. She was a strong, loving, kind, graceful, humble, smart, but stubborn woman who somehow was able to feed a family of eight on a small town carpenter's wage. Never once did she complain about any of the caregiving. She gave the best hugs and never let go of the person first. She was very particular about her cooking and baking. Her pies, especially her dewberry, will be dearly missed, along with her incredible cornbread dressing during the holidays, her oatmeal cookies, fudge, dewberry jelly, and the best dill pickles that one will ever eat. She enjoyed polka music and taking care of a summer garden and never once slapped the hand of her youngest child who would eat most of the fried squash not long after it hit the paper towel. She had incredible sewing skills, always mending clothes for the family – anything from tailoring pants, to making curtains for most every room in the house, creating outfits from scratch or following a pattern. She even was working on her own dress for a daughter's wedding up to and just past the time the wedding was to start. For another daughter's wedding she did all of the floral work. So as one can see, she was a very talented, hardworking and devoted wife, mom, grandma and nana. After her youngest started school, she helped make ends meet by working for Utex, MG Egg Division, Youens Memorial Hospital and as a cafeteria worker for Weimar ISD. Even in her later years, she cared for grandchildren and great-grandchildren living in and visiting her home. She took care of her husband of 66 years, Leo, until she could no longer walk herself. Just prior to that, she insisted that the family get a walker that had a tray so that she could still bring dad his meals. Gladys is survived by her husband Leo; daughters, Cheryl Ogden (Brian) of Houston, Sandra Vyvial (Michael) of Muldoon and Dana Williams (Lee) of Gonzales; sons, Darryl Hoelscher (Sharon) of Scottsville,VA, Dale Hoelscher of Houston and Jodie Hoelscher of Houston; grandchildren, Samantha Lee (Brooke) of Georgetown, Taylor Hoelscher of Richmond, VA, Logan Hoelscher of Scottsville,VA, Marisa Hopkins (James) of Weimar, Erica Mims of Praha, Dean Mims (Anne) of Round Rock, Dalnesha Hoelscher of Houston, Quintin Williams of Austin, Lauren Hazel (Jacob) of Jarrell, Jordan Williams of Gonzales, Grant Hoelscher of Houston, and Sarah Hoelscher of Houston; great-grandchildren, Colter Lee of Georgetown, Derek Rees of San Diego, CA, Shelby Hopkins of Weimar, Mckenzie Hopkins of Weimar, Daxon Sanchez of Praha, Aria Mims of Round Rock, Arianna Black-Harris of Houston, Taniya Lewis of Houston, and Tyler Johnston of Jarrell; sisters, Valerine Christ (Alton) of Houston, and Georgia Klesel (John) of Houston; brothers, Harvey Shimek (Nell) of Alvin, Werner Shimek of Houston, and Marvin Shimek (Jeanne) of Shiner; brothers-in-law, Owen Hoelscher of Houston, Allen Hoelscher (Jeanette) of Weimar, and Harris Hoelscher (Mary Helen) of Houston; and sister-in-law Rosalie Shimek of Dallas.
