Bio

Son of David Groff and Catherine Marie Kendig. He married Caroline Wishman and with her had three children, Ira Albert, Viola Alva and David Franklin Groff. The family homesteaded. Caroline died in 1892. Jacob's behavior apparently became of increasing concern to those around him and he was appointed a guardian and a caretaker. He was in care at an asylum as early as 1893 and apparently in and out of care. The attached article give some small idea about the concerns and the measures taken to see to his care and safety and to that of his children. Jacob was in care in the asylums of NE for decades of his later adult life, escaping once in 1901 and making the arduous journey back to York where he was captured and returned to the asylum in Hastings.
