Erastus E. Leak, son of Dr. Robert and Mary Ann H. Leak, was born in Texas after his parents moved there from Georgia about 1854, and was reared at Melrose, Nacogdoches County. An allopath, he was educated at Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, Georgia, graduating in 1882. He resided in Center for about 25 years, where he was a practicing physician, beginning in 1882. He married Lillian Blakey on May 20, 1883, in Nacogdoches County, Texas, and she died in 1890. In the 1900 Shelby County census, his second wife is listed as Kate E., 29, and children are daughters Pearl, b. Aug. 1884; Winfrey, b. Mar. 1888; and Onith, b. Sept. 1892. The Leaks had been married 9 years, and Kate Leak was the mother of 1 child, Onith. Also listed with the family are 2 boarders and a young male servant. His daughter Pearl Leak Payne died on January 6, 1909, and in 1910 their 3-yr-old granddaughter, Frances Payne, was living with Erastus E., Kate E., and Onita, 17. Dr. Leak retired about 10 years before his death. After his wife died in 1916, he moved to San Augustine to live with his daughter, Winfrey L. (Mrs. Rayford N.) Stripling. Dr. Leak died at his daughter's home after several years of declining health. His remains were taken to the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Bridges, Center, where funeral services were held, and interment was at Fairview Cemetery. Survivors included 1 child, Mrs. R. N. Stripling, and 1 brother, Daniel A. Leak, residing at Winnsboro.
