Ben Arlen Neel of Merkel, Texas passed away on June 26th, 2024. He passed away at home, surrounded by his family. Ben was born in Timpson, Texas to Vineta Ramsey Neel and Dolphus Neel on January 30, 1937. He went to school at Timpson High School and graduated from Sam Houston University. Ben married Barbara Wilson (he was always lucky like that) at the First United Methodist Church in Merkel, Texas in 1958. They were married for 66 years. After University, Ben began what would be a 37-year career in law enforcement and DPS Narcotics, where he would go on to receive numerous promotions, accolades and awards, including the "Legend Award". He retired as a DPS Narcotics Lieutenant. Ben was also a Master Mason with Abilene Lodge #559, a member of the Old Timers Narcotic Association, and attended the First United Methodist Church in Merkel, Texas. Ben was cherished and adored by a son, Monty Neel and wife Lori, and a daughter, Jan Neel. Ben and Barbara have 6 grandchildren, who all are quite sure that he hung the moon and the stars; Ali Brooks and husband Brent, Mitch Adair and wife Katie, Justin Neel, Samantha Neel, Adam Neel and wife Chloe, and Sidney Neel. They have 3 great-grandchildren; Mia Curtis, Kieran Curtis and Hadley Brooks. They are expecting a 4th great-grandchild this year. He is also survived by brothers-in-law, Dr. Keith Wilson and wife Mary Beth, Don Wilson, his sister, Peggy Hancock, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Ben was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Charles Neel and Joe Neel; his mother and father-in-law Ray and Ted Wilson and Judy Wilson, his sister-in-law. The family invited friends and family to a visitation on Saturday June 29th, 2024 at Starbuck Funeral Home, Merkel, Texas. A private burial service will be held at a future date. If you were unable to attend the service, there is a video available to watch in celebration of Ben and the unconditional love he showed his family and friends.
