Andrew T Brown was the son of John Cook Brown also said to be buried in the Viola Arkansas Cemetery and Mary Elizabeth Brown. John Cook Brown was born in 1830 in Tennessee and died in 1911 in Viola, Arkansas. Familiarly know as "Uncle Andy" Andrew T Brown was born in Bedford County Tennessee and came to Fulton County Arkansas with his family as a child. He was married to Melvina Lucinda Williford whose family had moved here from Bowling Green, Kentucky. Both families came to Arkansas at the end of the Civil War. He was a farmer as well as a skilled rock mason. Many landmarks remain in Fulton, Izard and Baxter counties as a tribute to his skills. The best known reminder of Brown's skills are the beautiful rock buildings at Cave City, Arkansas. Rock fences and towering chimneys as well as numerous other structures are scattered over the area, all testifying to the rock masonry skills of Andrew Brown. "Uncle Andy" had a unique talent for making sorghum molasses. After putting it in 50 gallon wooden barrels they shipped it to Oklahoma. At one time he and his son Ed raised a large crop of which they made 1,000 gallons of molasses. Mrs. Gladys Brown Roisland of Portland, Oregon, the only living child of Andrew T Brown arrived in Salem recently to celebrate Fulton County Homecoming Day. This is her first visit since August of 1932. His children were Minnie Brown Cooper, John A Brown, Ed T Brown, Ollie Brown Cooper and Gladys Brown Roisland. Many of his grandchildren are still living in the area including: Gary Cooper Principal of Salem HS. Irene Brown Short of Shorts Store in Salem, Rosco Brown of Jonesboro, Arkansas who serves in the Arkansas Legisture, Wilford Brown of Viola, secretary-treasurer of North Arkansas Electric Co-operative and a daughter-in-law Mrs. Mollie Brown who lives in Viola, Arkansas. Uncle Andy lived to be 94 years old and is buried at Viola, Arkansas.
