Bio

Daughter of Rev P. M. Callaway. Written by Lillian Carlisle West, Ella's youngest daughter: "October 1, 1856, Pitt Milner Callaway (Rev. Callaway), a Baptist minister of Eufaula, Alabama, made frequent missionary trips to St. Andrews Bay, preaching the gospel of Christ as he traveled. Saw the wonderful advantage of this section of the State and acquired US Land patent to the certain land in section 17 & 18 & 8 Oct. 1, 1856. 1857 Rev. Callaway erected a saw mill at the old mill site (now occupied by the St. Andrews Bay Motor Club) where he had a summer home for his family – shipping his lumber out by ocean going vessels. Sept 17, 1901, the Carlisles made their first trip to the bay in covered wagon. Feb. 21, 1902, Mrs. M. N. Carlisle, one of his daughters, received the land acquired by her father from the other heir – and settled on same. Only one child (Lillian) accompanied Mr. and Mrs. Carlisle to their new home – other children followed later. In 1905 a Post Office was established at the little store of the Carlisles and named Callaway in memory of Rev. Pitt M. Callaway. This little community store and Post office grew – until it was destroyed (by) fire – about 1906 or 07. In Section 8 the Lillian Carlisle plat was filed for, received March 14, 1908. A large portion of Section 17 and 18 was platted November 26, 1910 – known as the Pitt Carlisle plat - St. Andrews Bay Development Company"
