Lloyd Arthur "Chick" Kahlich, 96, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 20th. Through his final illness and death he was surrounded by the love of his family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Cathleen Johns Kahlich, his parents Arthur and Frances Kahlich, his sisters, Junell Schilling and JeAnn Foerster and brother, William Earl Kahlich. He was much loved by his surviving sister, Janice Kitten and brother, Robert Kahlich, many nieces and nephews spread around the world from Hawaii through the US to Great Britain. Lloyd was a devoted member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and had, in his youth, contemplated the priesthood. He was a member of the German-American community in Texas and could trace his lineage there to a time when Texas was part of Mexico. He spoke only "Old German" until he was sent to Fredericksburg, Texas for high school. In lieu of the priesthood, he joined the Army Air Corps, which later transitioned into the Air Force, at the end of WWII and was assigned to the Mighty 8th Air Force as an engine mechanic. He served until 1960. There he met his lifelong friend and future brother-in-law, H. D. "Dusty" Pike. They bought adjacent parcels of land in West Savannah, married sisters and built homes. Here they lived happily for the rest of their lives on what they called "The Hill". They worked together at American Cyanimid where they both retired. He loved gardening, reading, writing, cabinet building, tinkering with stuff and sitting in his rocking chair on the porch to watch the sun rise to start the new day. He will be dearly missed by all that loved him.
