Jane Catherine Smola, 86, of Stillwater, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, October 14, 2024. Visitation and Rosary service will begin at 7:00 p.m. Monday, October 21, 2024 at the Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will follow at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 22, also at Saint Francis. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Cemetery. Strode Funeral Home and Cremation is in charge of the arrangements. Jane was born to Joseph and Teresa (Schaefer) Mueggenborg on January 10, 1938 and raised on the Mueggenborg family farm in Kingfisher Oklahoma. She attended Sacred Heart Academy in Wichita Kansas. Her childhood interests included singing harmony with her sisters as they did kitchen cleanup after family meals, roller skating in the basement, helping in the garden and with the wheat harvest. Jane married Norman Smola of Kingfisher on April 30, 1960 and the couple enjoyed 63 years of marriage before Norman passed away in August 2023. After 14 months apart, they have been reunited for eternity. Jane and Norman raised five sons and passed along their strong Catholic faith, and their core values of hard work, helping others, love of nature and the outdoors. The family spent most weekends camping, fishing and water skiing at Pat Mayse Lake near Paris, Texas and along the Glover River in the Kiamichi mountains of SE Oklahoma while they lived in Hugo. While in Hugo, Jane perfected her recipes and skills in canning her world-famous dill pickles. The family moved to Stillwater in 1973 and ten years later purchased a 60-acre farm northeast of Stillwater. On the farm, Jane enjoyed their enormous garden where they grew their own cucumbers to fulfill the demand for those famous dill pickles that she canned every season, plus enough tomatoes to supply half of Payne County. Jane and Norman enjoyed watching the abundant wildlife, gathering pecans and walnuts during the fall and entertaining their sons and grandchildren at the farm. At the farm, they established a 'cut your own' Christmas tree operation on a portion of the property and ran that successfully for several years. Jane was a gracious host to all Christmas tree customers, greeting them with her warm smile and cheerful voice, offering complementary hot apple cider spiked with cinnamon red hots. Jane was known for her positive outlook on life, always putting the needs of others before herself. She radiated love, compassion and caring to all of her family and everyone she came into contact with. She always had kind and encouraging words to share with anyone who crossed her path. Jane's youngest brother Henry often referred to her as Saint Jane. In 2001, Jane and Norman moved from their home in town to the farm where they enjoyed 20+ years of gardening, farming, fishing, wildlife watching and entertaining their children and grandchildren. Jane and Norman were long time members (51 years) of Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church where Jane was very active in the Altar Society. They developed many strong friendships with other church members. Jane and Norman were strong supporters of Oklahoma State University Athletics and Jane's favorite was women's basketball. Jane was predeceased by her parents, her husband Norman, and two sons, Paul and Vince. She is survived by three sons, Doug, Don and Ed; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She is also survived by three sisters, Dorothy Taylor of Shawnee, Pat Crone of Whitesboro, Texas, and Marty James of Greely, Colorado. The family requests that those wishing to honor Jane's name do so by making donations to alz.org.
