CARROLL, RUCKER T. Rucker T. Carroll, of Galveston, is one of the most experienced and expert pilots of the Gulf of Mexico. His master pilot's certificate covers all the district from Key West to the Rio Grande, and all the harbors, bays and tributaries to the head of tidewater. Since 1898 he has been in the state government service as a bar pilot. His standing among his profession was illustrated at the organization of the Master Mates and Pilots' Association, No. 20, when he was elected its first president, and held the office five years in succession. He was then out for a year, and in 1909 was again elected and is now serving in that office. Mr. Carroll was born in Van Zandt County, Texas, May 2, 1858. His father, Zachariah Carroll, a native of Louisiana, first came to Texas in antebellum days, but returned and lived in his native state till the war, and then settled in Austin County and lived in Texas till his death in 1879. He was a farmer and combined with that occupation the business of contracting. Susanna (Clark) Carroll, the mother of Rucker T., was born in Louisiana and died in 1867. Captain Carroll's schooling was obtained in the public institutions of the city of Houston. After a somewhat varied employment for several years, in 1879 he began his sea-faring career. He was first a cabin boy, then ship's cook, and from that became a sailor before the mast. He showed ability and industry, and was promoted to mate, and received a master pilot's certificate from the United States government. For a number of years he combined the two occupations of master of vessel and pilot. He has seen service in all the gulf waters and ports. He affiliates with the Harmony Lodge No. 6, A. F. & A. M., with the Knights of Honor, and with the Galveston Pilots' Association. In politics Captain Carroll is a Democrat and is a member of the Methodist church. He married, in 1882, Miss Caroline Hemelman, of Galveston. She is of German descent. Their three children are: Sam A., a student in medicine at Washington University, St. Louis; William Z. and Pearl.
