Bio

Anthony James Maxa (Tony) Born May 3, 1948 Died September 21, 2024 Tony grew up in South Austin, attending St. Ignatius grade school which included serving as an altar boy at the church. He went on to graduate from Wm. B. Travis High School, and studied for an Associates of Applied Science degree in Automotive Technology. He was drafted into the U. S. Army on June 18, 1968. He served in the 68th armory division as a heavy truck driver. During his service he was decorated with the National Defense Service Medal and received a Medal as a Sharp Shooter. He was honorably discharged June 19, 1970 with an additional 4 years in the Army Reserves. Tony was Senior Master Technician at the 3M Plant Engineering Austin Center Utility Plant from 1988 to 2019. The great story teller, Tony often topped off conversations with his ever-handy humorous quips and personal memory stories. When family was together, he always captured our imaginations with the episodes he remembered from our childhood pranks. In his youth, he survived a jump from the home rooftop in his imaginary roll of Superman. As an adult, he often wore a Superman T-shirt or painted a large "S" on his chest entertaining all the little ones at family gatherings. Always a Chevrolet Man, teenager Tony drove around in his Green 1957 Belaire Chevy, often going to his running buddy Edwin's neighborhood home where they would head to the family pool for a swim. Later in life he was a loving and caring single parent to his son, Bobby. Much later, enabling his passion for the 1957 Chevy Belaire, he and Bobby restored his 4th and final Chevy…a RED 1957 Belaire, their pride and joy. Tony cherished and acknowledged his Dad, Leon and Mother, Emily's thoughtful kindnesses, sacrifices, and most of all remarkable love. It made him very proud as a Boy Scout that his mother served as the Den Mother. As time went on he brought great joy to them, when he gifted them their little dog, MAX, who became Leon and Emily's daily dose of happiness and companionship, even into their last years. He was wholly and totally devoted to his wife, and high school sweetheart, Shari. After high school their lives went separate ways until May 2005, when they re-connected, their love rekindled; marrying in the Coupland Inn & Dance Hall. Thru the years, Tony faithfully fulfilled a 'father role' for his step-grandson Nathan. He was the father figure for two Monaghan step-children and a grandfatherly figure for the numerous step-grandchildren. Recently some of these family members participated in multiple baptisms in the river with their church in New Braunfels. Tony was visibly moved with the joy and pride this brought him. His heart ached for those who were less provided for than him. So for many years, unbeknown to most, this big heart moved him to generously support the Saint Jude Foundation and the American Indian Foundation. Surviving Anthony James Maxa are his son, Robert Edwin (Bobby) Maxa & (Fiance Alea Brundage), his granddaughter, Camryn Shea Maxa & (Fiance John "Rooster" Hodge), and his great grandson, Hondo. Also surviving is his brother David Joseph Maxa & (Wife Christine), his sisters Marianne Maxa Morris and Carol Maxa Horyza & (Husband John Patrick), and his brother-in-law Ronald E. Peterson along with numerous nieces and nephews. Anthony was pre-deceased by his parents, Leon A. and Emily M. Maxa, his sister Theresa Maxa Peterson and by his brother-in-law, Carter Morris. Visitation will begin on Thursday, October 3, 2024 at 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at Westoak Woods Baptist Church, 2900 W. Slaughter Lane, Austin, Texas. Funeral service to follow at 12:00 pm. Burial will be at 1:30 pm at Forest Oaks Memorial Park 6300 W. William Cannon Dr., Austin, Texas 78749.
