Patriarch of Church Passes Pioneer, Retired Framer of Granger Dies at Age 78 Granger , Utah – Patriarch John Howard Bawden, 78 , a pioneer and retired farmer of Granger died at the family home Tuesday at 4 P.M. of carcinoma. He was born Oct 10, 1858 at Mill Creek a son of Henry and Sarah Bawden, early Utah Pioneers. He was active in Church and Civic affairs. In his early manhood he moved to the region known as "West Jordan", and helped build Granger. His work was directed toward building of canals, roads and schools. He served without remuneration as a trustee of the Fifty-ninth District School. When a ward was organized Mr. Bawden was chosen as a member of the bishopric. He served as a counselor to Bishop Daniel J. McRae in the Granger Ward for 30 years. In 1908 he went on a mission to Great Britain, staying there 27 months. After his release from the bishopric he became stake genealogical representative in the Cottonwood Stake; and when the Oquirrh Stake was organized he headed the genealogical work of the new Stake until he was ordained a patriarch in 1924. Because of his understanding and kindly attitude, he was knnow widely as "Uncle John". Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Mary Olive Bawden and the following sons and daughters: John Henry; Willard G., William O., Richard G., M. Smith, Ferris N. and Marwood Bawden, Mrs W.A. Mackay. Mrs. Mary B Bangerter, Mrs. William H. Bangerter, Mrs. E.C. Inkley and Miss Lorraine Bawden all of Granger; Mrs Albert W. Daw, of Murray, brothers and sisters; Leslie P Bawden, of Mill Creek; Mrs. Marth North, of Holliday; Mrs. Ophelia Burton, Salt Lake City; Mrs. Elizabeth Morgan, Logan; Mrs. Lavenia Andrus and Mrs. Annie Andrus, of Ucon, Idaho; 60 grandchildren. Mr. Bawden had previously lost and buried two wives, Alice Freestone and Mary Gerber. Funeral Services will be held at the Granger Ward Chapel on Thirty-second West and Thirty-fifth South, Sunday at 1 p.m. Interment will be in the Elysian Burial Park. Friends may call at the family residence at Thirty-sixth West and Thirty-fifth South, prior to the funeral services.
