Bio
Bertha ("Bettie") Zimmerman--daughter of Wilhelm ("William") Zimmermann and Maria ("Mary") Hykel --was born 8 February 1885 near Round Rock, Travis County, Texas. She was the first of five children of William and Mary Zimmermann, who both immigrated from Europe (Germany and Moravia, respectively). On 12 March 1901 in Williamson County, Texas, Bettie married Edmund Hunke Jr. --son of Edmund Hunke and Marie Klesse . Edmund Jr. and Bettie had three children: (1) Edmund William Hunke (1901 - 1970) (2) Elizabeth Agnes Hunke (1903 - 1967) (3) Alfred Adolf Hunke (1907 - 1986) After Edmund Hunke Jr.'s death in 1933, Bettie began remodeling the former Ed Hunke's City Bakery into a department store, a building on which she held the lease for many years. By 1936, the building that had housed the Hunke Bakery had been converted. An article in the San Antonio Express on Sunday, 26 July 1936, stated: ---------- TAYLOR LEASING ACTIVE. TAYLOR, Tex., July 21.--New business concerns are making leases in Taylor. Leasing of the store formerly occupied by the T.W. Marse Company by Montgomery Ward Company leads in major leases. The building is being remodeled by the Taylor owners. Changing of the Hunke Bakery on Main Street into a department store is about complete. ---------- Bettie Zimmerman married, and outlived, four husbands during her lifetime: (1) Edmund Hunke Jr. (1874 - 1933) (2) Samuel Prentice Sevier (1894-1944) (3) Johnnie Daniel Hix (1899 - 1960) (4) Ernest Rogers Adams (1895 - 1966) At 85 years of age, Bertha ("Bettie") Zimmerman Hix died 7 August 1970 at Johns Community Hospital in Taylor, Williamson County, Texas.
