Bio

Marilyn Sue Kahlich of Hereford, TX made her final journey home on May 4, 2024. Mom was an easy-going, uncomplicated person that never wanted for much and was happy and content with what she had. She was a woman of few words, except when chatting on the phone for hours with friends. She never wanted to be the center of attention and she wasn't the loudest person in the room, but when she wanted to land a zinger, she did it with grace, finesse, a slight smile, and little laugh. Mom never aspired for a great career, but she was a professional in many things over the years. She volunteered for various church activities, composed the "You" for St. Anthony's Church, worked at the S&H Green Stamp Store, Wishes and the Hereford Senior Citizen's Thrift Store. Mom loved to quilt with the Sew and Sew quilting group in Hereford and passed many beautiful quilts down to children and grandchildren. Along with everything else, Mom was an artist. She took up oil painting for several years and produced paintings which her family display proudly on the walls of their homes. She even participated in a logo design contest for Catholic Life Insurance Union, and her design was incorporated into the logo as it stands today. Mom's biggest career achievement was working alongside Dad managing and maintaining the farm and raising her kids. She didn't shy away from work. She drove tractor, many times with one of her toddlers napping in the cab with her; hauled cotton trailers to the gin; planted, harvested and canned a very large garden every year; raised and butchered rabbits and chickens; kept the farm books; bottle fed calves; and didn't shy away from teaching her children the value of a hard day's work via child labor, particularly during winter calf bottle feeding. She loved to watch the Texas Rangers, adored Elvis and butterflies, and never missed a hair appointment. Mom was proud of her family heritage and heirlooms. Although the family jokes about her being the most organized hoarder known to man, she meticulously documented, labeled and organized all things that meant something to her, in an effort to make sure it wasn't forgotten. Reed Marilyn was born to Edmund and Louetta Kitten on July 18, 1937, in Slaton, Texas. Contrary to her adult years, she apparently "got sick" frequently when there was work to be done - a trait passed down to a few in following generations. Unbeknownst to her, she met the love of her life, William Earl Kahlich, the day he was born. They were married 21 years later, on October 7, 1959, in Hereford, TX. Her 2 brothers – Leroy Kitten and wife, Ann of Amarillo, TX; Charles Kitten and wife, Sandy of McKinney, TX – were benefactors of Mom's caretaking skills as she took care of them when growing up on the farm and in school. Mom and Dad spent 63 years together building a family of successful, thoughtful, caring, hard-working, independent, and loyal children – Phillip Eugene Kahlich (deceased), Phyllis Cornelius of Amarillo, TX, Chris Kahlich and wife, Laurie, of Chelsea, OK; Suzanne Butcher and husband, Mike, of Arcadia, KS; Tricia Thompson and husband, Charles, of Amarillo, TX. They are smart, kind, funny, loyal people with a steadfast work ethic because of her. Mom absolutely loved and lit up any time her "grands" were around.  When the grandkids - Chance Cornelius; Taylor Cornelius and wife, Abby; Glenn Kahlich and wife, Megan; Phillip Kahlich and wife, Danielle; Megan Amershek and husband, Justin; Nichole Perng and husband, Dennis; Abby Butcher; Cale Maupin and wife, Jessi; Quinn Maupin and wife, Michelle; Calvin Thompson and wife, Ashton; Coltin Thompson and wife, Megan - came to visit, fish, work, butcher, or just hang out, she dropped everything to spend time with them. The number of hours she spent taking care of sick grandchildren was too many to count. She was always there when needed. She loved attending school and sports activities any chance she could get Dad off the farm to go. And when the "littles" (great-grandchildren) – Addison, Sadence & Tripp Kahlich; Kyndal & Graham Kahlich; Brixby Amershek; Patrick Maupin; and Henry Thompson - came around, she would get completely tickled to hold, hug and love on them. She looked forward to the weekly and holiday visits to see how much they had grown or changed since the last time she saw them. Mom's life will be celebrated with a family visitation on Wednesday, May 8 at 6:00 PM with a rosary to follow at 7:00 PM at Mendez and Mullins Funeral Home in Hereford Texas. After a funeral mass on Thursday, May 9, at 11:00 AM at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Hereford, TX, she will be laid to rest beside the love of her life at St. Anthony's Cemetery in Hereford, TX.
