Marie Woracek Passes at Age 80 Marie (Smith) Woracek, a longtime Spanaway resident, passed away peacefully at Franciscan Hospice House in Tacoma on May 13, 2008 following a two-and-a-half-year struggle with lung cancer. Marie is survived by her three daughters, Sandra Hunter, Karen Andersen and Joyce Schumaker; three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, brother Al Smith, sister Donna Dozier, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Born on May 4, 1928 to Alfred Marion and Laura Smith in Azalea (Glendale), Oregon, Marie and her family settled in Spanaway when she was nine. Marie attended Kapowsin School through the eleventh grade. In 1945, she traveled by train to Sanford, FL to marry George Woracek, who was in the Naval Air Force. They returned to Tacoma after the war, finally settling in Spanaway, where they raised three daughters and made their home until 1990. Marie loved her family very much. They were her highest priority throughout her life. Marie was an active citizen and spent many years as a member of the Spanaway PTA, Women's Fire Auxiliary, Ladies Lions Club, and the Spanaway Methodist Church. She also worked in retail, first with Ashmore Drugs and then as the store manager for Paul's Shoe Store in Spanaway. Marie loved her life in Spanaway and enjoyed being part of the community for 52 yrs. She joyfully embraced the people she met and had many friends. Retired in 1980, Marie and George spent several years traveling until they fell in love with the warm weather and new friends in Yuma, AZ. In 1990 they made it their permanent home. Marie loved life in Yuma, which was filled with daily social activities, dancing, music, potlucks, and many loving friends. In 2005 Marie was diagnosed with lung cancer and began the last chapter of her journey. In 2007 she moved back to Tacoma to be close to family and friends who could provide needed support. Marie's 80 years of life were filled with love, joy, and compassion. Marie was always the one to help others with a smile, a hug, or with an ear to listen. She was loved by many and she will be missed dearly, but we know her spirit will live on as we continue to celebrate life. Thank you, Mom, for being a part of our lives. Your love will always be with us. All family and friends are invited to celebrate Marie's life at 2 PM Monday, May 19, 2008 at Fir Lane Memorial Park, 924 E. 176th St., in Spanaway.
