William "Cliff" Nowling, 82, of Bloomington, died Tuesday at his residence. Born Sept. 7, 1925, in Crothersville, he was the son of James E. and Viola (Janes) Nowling. He retired from Cummins Diesel in 1984 with 22 years of service. He served in the United States Army during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1945. He was awarded two Purple Hearts, the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the WWII Victory Medal and a European Campaign Medal (two battle stars) for his honorable service during the war. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and a member of the Crothersville Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Wilma (Lewis) Nowling; four sons, Colby Nowling (Betty) and Barry Nowling, all of Bloomington, Dewey Nowling (Sherry) of Camby and Bill Nowling of Bedford; one daughter, Sue Payne of Bloomington; eight grandchildren, James Payne, Justin Payne, Jenny Porter, Lacy Nowling, Viola Miller and Ashley Morrison, all of Bloomington, Jason Nowling and Lori Lindsey, both of Indianapolis; 10 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Donald Nowling of Medora. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, James Nowling, who was killed in action in France during World War II. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Deremiah-Frye Mortuary, Greene & Harrell Chapel. Burial will be at Valhalla Memory Gardens with military rites conducted by the Veterans Honor Guard.
