John Cherny Brown July 13, 1940 - March 2, 2024 John Brown John Cherny Brown passed away March 2 nd in San Francisco, California at age 83. John was born in Columbus, NE to Harry and Helen (Cherny) Brown. He was the youngest of three children. He was the only male grandchild of his maternal grandfather and was named after him. Growing up in a small town with a close-knit community, he had a wonderful childhood. When he was old enough, his father took him hunting and fishing. Throughout his life he kept his love for fishing and went fishing with his work friends on a house boat at Lake Shasta. John's mother had a music degree and played the piano at home and for local club events. By being exposed to music at an early age, he developed a special love for music. He took up playing the drums and became very proficient. In High School his two close friends, both named John, played in the Kramer High School Band. He participated in many band contests and always earned top ratings and awards. He and his two friends became known as the "the three Johns". They became interested in jazz music and played with the high school jazz band. John had a life-long love of jazz and collected several thousand records that he listened to while practicing drumming on his drum pad. John's father and grandfather both worked for the Union Pacific Railroad in Columbus, so he was around trains from an early age. As he grew up, he took many train trips and developed a life-long fascination with railroading. After he graduated from high school, he attended Northwestern University in Evanston, IL., earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering. It was there that John met his future wife, Doris Beach, in a calculus class. After graduating, John took a job with Standard Oil of California and moved to San Francisco. John and Doris were married in 1964 and spent 60 years doing everything together. Bicycle riding became an important part of their life. They eventually joined the Stone's Endspurt racing club and spent many hours training with the other members. John liked to take photos of bicycle races, trains and the people in his life. He became very skilled and purchased many Leica cameras. He always seemed to be the man behind the camera, not in front of it. While working for what would become Chevron, John had a number of positions. When he first went to work, he helped design a Cracker for the refinery in Richmond, CA. He then moved into more computer work with the IBM 360. Later he worked on the backup and recovery plan in case of a disaster. While considering what would happen if there were a major earthquake, he developed a plan to reunite families for which he won a President's award. In the final days of his career, he led a team dedicated to computer security. John retired from Chevron after 35 years and enjoyed his life doing everything together with his wife. John leaves behind his wife Doris, his sister Margery Sellers of Centennial, CO, his five nephews and a niece, and his friends and Caregivers, Rodil, Ruby and John Ross Gonzales, Regie Rosetes, and Summit Galvan. His sister Mary Thurber predeceased him. A celebration of his life will be held at Duggan's Serra Mortuary at 500 Westlake Ave, Daly City on Wednesday March 13 at 4:00.pm In his memory, any stories or anecdotes about him would be greatly appreciated.
