Bio

Erwin J. Bayer of Schulenburg, Texas, passed away February 22, 2024, in Houston at the age of 86. He was born on May 12, 1937, and was preceeded in death by his parents, Lad and Lillie Bayer; and his beloved wife, Mildred. He is survived by his sister, Alice Hollas of Schulenburg, Texas, and his brother, Daniel of Humble, Texas; four children, Gregory, Dwayne, Randall and Kimberly and their spouses; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. E.J. and Mildred were married for over 64 years. They were high school sweethearts attended Schulenburg High School, Class of 1955. E.J. was a member of the band and an editor of the high school newspaper. His biggest pride was his wife, Mildred, even after her passing in August 2021. His first job was as a clerk with a steamship company until he went to Anderson, Clayton & Co., where he held various positions for over 20 years. They formed the Ranger Insurance Co., where he managed the crop hail department. In 1980, he went to work at CNA Insurance as a sales rep and retired from there in 1996. This sales and marketing career was a perfect fit for him and his personality. He enjoyed organizing hunting and fishing trips with his agents or sales team, as well as committee projects and hospitality rooms at various conventions. E.J. believed in the discipline of working hard. He was a well-respected member of the CNA sales team, receiving multiple top awards for achievements. He also represented Catholic Life Insurance for 60 years. He was recipient of the 12th Apostle Award 18 times including #1 Apostle five times. During success in the insurance business, he also managed to be involved in many joint venture real estate partnerships as Trustee and General Partner. He owned a couple of farms in the Ammannsville and Dubina area of Fayette County, enjoyed collecting tractors, had a passion for gardening, and organizing dinner parties, including the Valentines dance party in the local area. He always enjoyed being the MC for such events. Visitation will be held Friday, March 1, 2024, at 4:00 p.m. with the rosary to be recited at 5:00 p.m. at Schwenke Baumgarten Funeral Home in Schulenburg. Funeral mass will be held Saturday, March 2, 2024, at 10:00 am at St. Mary Catholic Church in High Hill. Interment will follow in High Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary Catholic Church in High Hill.
