Bio

Palouse Republic May 25, 1917 J W Comer passed away at his home on West Main St. at noon Monday, May 21, after an illness of many months from cancer of the stomach. During almost the entire winter he had been unable to leave his home but about a week before his death, rallied to such an extent that he was able to walk uptown and greet his friends. The latter part of last week, however, he became so weak that he could not leave the house and sank rapidly until death came. So determined was the aged man to live that it was impossible to keep him in bed and death came as he sat on the side of his bed with his feet on the floor. He was conscious and determined to the last. John W. Comer was born at Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1838 and was 79 years old at the time of his death. When a young man he went to Grand Forks, North Dakota, where he lived for many years. In 1890, the family moved to Viola, where they made their home for 11 years, moving to Palouse about 16 years ago. Mr Comer was agood citizen, honorable with his dealings with his fellow men and had a large circle of friends. He leaves besides his widow, one daughter, Camille who is at home, and 2 sons, Roy C. and Jesse, who live at Sprague. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon from the Christian Church and was largely attended. The sermon was preached by the Rev. W. G. Seates. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery. John W. Comer married Elinor Christy on 11 November 1858 in Davis County, Iowa. They were the parents of Martha Jane, Sam, Abijah, Huldah E., William Riley, Mary Louise, and John Wesley Comer. He married Johannah Sieverson on 3 January 1891 in Grand Forks, North Dakota. They were the parents of Jessie S., Roy C, and Olive Camilla Comer.
