From the Mason City Globe Gazette: 5 January 1961: Former Spillville Mayor dies in Seattle, Wash. SPILLVILLE -- Fred J. Marek, 70, died suddenly Tuesday, while visiting his daughter in Seattle, Wash. A retired auto dealer, he was mayor of Spillville for several, was a director of the Citizens' Savings Bank here and a member of the Elks Lodge. Funeral Arrangements are pending the arrival of the body here Saturday. Burial will be in Haug Cemetery. Balik funeral Home will be in charge. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Ruth Pressler, Seattle, Wash., and a half brother, Emil Benda, Detroit, Mich. His wife died five years ago.
