Bio

Sandra Dawes Obituary Published by The Times-Picayune from Oct. 31 to Nov. 4, 2023): Sandra "Sandy" Schwebke Dawes, aged 83, passed away on September 14, 2023, in New Orleans, LA. Born on August 6, 1940, in Eldora, IA, to the late Marvin and Dorothy (Carson) Schwebke. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister. Sandy dedicated her career to teaching nursing and was a treasured instructor to her students. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the College of St. Teresa in Winona, MN, and her Master of Science in Nursing Administration from the University of St. Francis. Her nursing career began at the renowned Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN where in a chance meeting in an elevator met the love of her life, James (Jim) Dawes, who was visiting from New Orleans. Married and living in the French Quarter, Sandy taught at the Charity School of Nursing. A career opportunity for Jim took them to South Georgia. Determined to make a lasting impact in her new town, she established the Practical Nursing Program at Wayne County Memorial Hospital in Jesup, GA, and served as its instructor. In 1977, Jim and Sandy had the opportunity to come back to New Orleans and start a new business. They were in the Shell gas station business for close to four decades. Sandy maintained her commitment to nursing education and continued her career as an instructor at Jefferson Parish Vocational and Technical School eventually becoming the Director of the Health Occupations Department until her retirement in 2004. In her leisure time, Sandy delighted in embarking on day trips with her children to Georgia's beautiful beaches, and exploring many historical sites and landmarks in New Orleans and the southeast. Her favorite pastime was following Saints football, and LSU athletics. She was a devoted Saints fan and held season tickets for 45 years, never missing a home game. Much beloved by her children James (Randy) Dawes (Jennifer), Lisa Reynolds (Rod), and Peter Dawes (Nicole) and her adored grandchildren Emily Tanner (Alex), Matthew Dawes, Carson Reynolds, Lindsey Reynolds, Sarah Reynolds, Stephen Dawes, Benji Dawes and her two great-grandchildren, Jack Tanner and Duncan Tanner, and her sister, Susan Hass (John). Sandy is preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, James R. Dawes. Sandy's warm smile, wonderful sense of humor, and dedication to her family will be deeply missed. A visitation will be held on Saturday, November 25, at Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home, 3827 Canal St., at 12:30 p.m., followed by a Memorial Service at 2:00 p.m. The burial will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Sandy's favorite places in New Orleans, the Audubon Nature Institute.
