Bio
James was the son of Henry Alvis Grimes and wife Elizabeth Evans Grimes. He married on 03 November 1867 to Mary Elizabeth Tune-Satterfield, widow of Jasper Satterfield who died in 1862 in Nashville during his service in the Civil War. In an article published in the The Herald and Mail newpaper in Columbia, TN, dated 26 January 1877, it was reported that James left Tennessee for Texas. Wife Mary Elizabeth is listed as an heir in the estate records of her father Joshua on 06 November 1882, Lewis County, TN Court Minutes BK Oct. 1881-Feb. 1891, p. 56. She is listed as Elizabeth Grimes along with her husband Elihu Grimes as living out of the state of Tennessee. From census and other records we find Mary and James Grimes had the following children all born in Tennessee except for the last two: William H., b. 1869; John B., b. 1872; Susan C., b. 1874; Mary Jane, b. 1876; Carrie, b. 1879 TX and Thomas Elihu, b. 1881 TX. Research is ongoing to establish the history of James and his family. Except for their last son Thomas, I have been unable to locate the family after the 1880 census.
