W.D. Monk GILMER (Spl.) - Funeral services for William D. Monk, 95, of Gilmer, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Croley Chapel. Burial will be in the Morris Cemetery. Mr. Monk died Wednesday at his home after a long illness. Born at Mt. Vernon, he moved to Upshur County in 1894. He was a retired farmer and cattleman. Survivors are his wife; four sons, W.A. Monk, J.H. Monk, and E.R. Monk, all of Gilmer; and J.G. Monk of Midland; two daughters, Mrs. Julia Long and Mrs. Annie Turman, both of Gilmer, and several grandchildren. Mr. Monk is a mystery. There are missing census records for part of Titus County during the time of his birth. The Johnson's left Barbour County, Alabama around 1868 and were in Titus County by 1869. No marriage record has been found on the usual genealogical websites. He appears in the 1880 census in Franklin County with his mother and stepfather John Anderson Nations. William and his sister, Nannie D Monk, as listed as Nations' children. Cornelia married him around 1873 and had six more children. His sister married Rice Releford Ramsey, she died in 1929.
