Carol Whittington May 28, 1938 - November 2, 2023 Carol Mae Whittington, 85, a resident of Portland, died Thursday morning, November 2, 2023, at Adventist Medical Center in Portland. Private Cremation Rites, Hoyt Crematory, Forest Grove, Oregon. Carol Mae Hoskins was born on May 28, 1938, to Loren and Avis Hoskins in Guide Rock, Nebraska. After graduating from High School in Haddam Kansas, she married Roy Dean Cross on July 3, 1955. Their first child Edward was born in 1956. Michael joined their family in 1958 and in 1959, Karen was born. Just 6 weeks later Roy was killed in an accident leaving Carol a young widow with 3 small children. In early 1961, while attending church she met a young man, Larry Whittington, who was preaching in Auburn, Nebraska. They were married on June 30, 1961. David joined the family in 1962, followed by Cynthia in 1966 and Samuel in 1971.The young family moved around following teaching positions, living in various cities throughout Nebraska. In 1970 they began their western migration, moving to Denver, CO. After living there for about a year they moved to Milwaukie, OR in 1971. They began attending church at the Duke Street Church of Christ where they continued to attend for many years until they began attending at Crossroads Church of Christ in 1980. Carol started working at Kienow's Bakery in approximately 1976, where she honed her skill as a cake decorator. She made hundreds of cakes for family, friends and students that included wedding cakes, graduation cakes and birthday cakes. During this time, Montavilla Church of Christ (Crossroads Church of Christ) started a private Christian School and Carol volunteered at the school along with continuing to work at Kienow's. They also started attending Crossroads. She eventually retired from the bakery and became a full-time teacher at Crossroads Christian School where she worked until she retired in 2003. Carol enjoyed being busy and found time on her hands, so she became the Director of the Crossroads Food Bank. She continued in that capacity until her health deteriorated to the point where she was unable to keep up with the demands in 2020. Carol Mae (Hoskins, Cross) Whittington passed peacefully into the loving arms of her Savior on Nov. 2, 2023, in the early morning hours. She is preceded in death by her first husband, Roy Dean Cross, her first grandson, and her daughter, Cynthia. She is survived by her husband Larry Whittington, son Ed (Jan), son Michael (Marsha), daughter Karen, son David, son Sam (Juliane), 15 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, 2 sisters, 1 brother and multiple nieces and nephews.
