United States Army First Lieutenant Tarkington was killed in action in World War II. Bernard was a member of the 301st Field Artillery Battalion and was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his valor. Bernard's remains were returned to Texas and his reburial service was held on 8/12/48. Bazette Funeral Held For First Lieutenant BAZETTE, Texas, Aug. 12. - Funeral services for First Lt. Booth Tarkington, 30, killed in action in Germany, Jan. 21, 1945, were held at the Bazette Baptist Church Thursday afternoon. Burial was in the Prairie Point Cemetery with a military service. Graduate of Kerens High School, Lieutenant Tarkington entered the armed forces with the Kerens Texas National Guard (36th Division) in November, 1940. He was a member of the Bazette Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Frances Tarkington, Dallas; parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.B. Tarkington, Kerens; three brothers, I.C. Tarkington and Tom Tarkington, both of Kerens, and Earl Tarkington, Kemp; five sisters, Mrs. Beulah Crutchfield and Miss Hazel Tarkington, both of Kemp; Mrs. Paulin erguson [sic], Mrs. Lorene Hopkins and Mrs. Madeline Vernon, all of Kerens. Reburial services for 1st Lt. Booth Tarkington were held at 3:30 p.m. August 12, 1948 from the Bazette Baptist Church. Rev. Jared Cartlidge, pastor of First Baptist Church of Corsicana, conducted the service, assisted by Rev. John Boyd, pastor of the Bazette Baptist Church (of which Booth was a member). Lt. Harold L. Chapman of Camp Hood escorted the body from Fort Worth to Kerens. Interment was made in the Prairie Point Cemetery with Btry. C. 133 Field Artillery Bn. National Guard in charge of the service at the grave.
