Bio

RHOME - Billy Travis Yant was born in a dirt floor farmhouse in Rhome, Texas on April 15,1934 to Letcher and Minnie Yant. After moving to Fort Worth, Billy began working at the age of 14 pushing an ice cream cart all around Northside thus beginning his decades long work history. He attended J.P. Elder Middle and North Side High Schools, graduating in 1952. Upon his high school graduation, Billy enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in active duty during the Korean conflict. It was during this time he was stationed in Germany at a field artillery unit. In April 1959, Billy joined the Fort Worth Fire Department as well as enrolling in Arlington State earning an Associate of Arts Degree to help further his Civil Service career. After 34 years of dedicated service to the City of Fort Worth, Captain Yant retired being acknowledged by the President of the United States for his life saving acts performed during his career. Billy was preceded in death by his parents, Letcher and Minnie Royal Yant; sisters and their husbands, Dorothy and Hugh Witcher and Nancy and Jim Summers. He was reunited with his mother and daddy, his sisters, family and friends on Sept. 4, 2023. Billy is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Barbara of Benbrook; children, Michael Yant and wife, Cheryl of Fort Worth, Melissa Vinton and husband, Edward of Midlothian, Christy Eastman and husband, Monte of Aledo; five grandchildren, Adam, Bradley, Travis and wife, Seana, Jessica, and Trevor; three great-grandchildren, Rylan, Taylor and Elliott; as well as numerous nieces. Funeral: 2:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 11, 2023, in Greenwood Chapel, with a visitation at 1 p.m. prior to the service. The family has requested casual dress. If desired, memorials may be made to Cook Children's Hospital in Fort Worth or a charity of your choosing. Published by Greenwood Funeral Home
