Bio

See 1860 Jackson, Spencer County, Indiana census James Hougland age 70 and [grand]daughter Ellen age 16. Thus, it is admittedly possible that this James 1790-c.1861, [may be] the son of Abraham 1770-1845, did not apply for an exemption. Any such theory seems inconsistent with the record; I tried to follow three James' lines of travel but they apparently didn't leave adequate paper trail[s]. We often have to use what we have and speculate as to the rest.
