Bio

From Schaetter Funeral Home: Sophia Kveton loved life and navigated its unpredictable turns with grace, joy, kindness, and incredible strength. She completed her journey and was called home by her heavenly Father in the early morning hours of October 4, 2023, with family at her side. Sophia was born to humble beginnings April 17, 1936, in Wallis, Texas, the eighth of nine children, to Frank and Betty Petrash. In February 1955 she married her high school sweetheart and love of her life, Johnnie Kveton. They raised their six children in Port Lavaca, Texas and were very proud supporters of the numerous athletic and academic endeavors of their offspring. They attended almost every event for a period that spanned three decades. They were both very well known to members of the Calhoun County Sandcrab Booster Club and Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church. Once her youngest child started school, Sophia worked in the school district in various capacities, including as secretary for the district administrator and as a teacher's aide for a special education class where she continued to share her nurturing spirit. Sophia and John loved the outdoors. Moving to the hill country in Comfort, Texas in 1997 upon retirement was the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. This love was shared by and with children and grandchildren on their 40 acres, in the home built by three generations of family. Hunting and fishing on the property were part of the experience, as was playing dominoes until all hours of the night. "Grandma" was an astute master of the game of "42" and although there were times that some of her grandchildren thought she certainly had to be cheating, no one ever challenged her because she was so pure of heart. After her husband passed away in 2015, Sophia insisted on staying in their country home, and entertained family and friends on a regular basis. Faith and family were always of utmost importance to her. Watching birds, deer and other wildlife while sitting at her kitchen table brought her great joy right up until the end of her life. She was preceded in death by Johnnie Kveton, her husband of 60 years; her parents Frank and Betty Petrash; her brothers Raymond Petrash and Frank Petrash; her sisters Annie Mlcak, Julie Mlcak, and Georgia Hrdlicka. She is survived by her children Cheryl McLaughlin of Sealy, Texas; Joyce Loving and her husband Mark of Austin, Texas; Russell Kveton and his wife Virginia of Seguin, Texas; Glenn Kveton and his wife Monica of Adkins, Texas; Neal Kveton and his wife Dee Anna of Olivia, Texas; Angela Koopmann and her husband Robert of Friendswood, Texas; her grandchildren Shawn Moebes and Ryan Davis; Andrew Pevoto, Peter Pevoto, and Ben Pevoto; Emily Cantu and Annette Kveton; Kyle Kveton, Clinton Kveton, Amy Cox, Todd Kveton, and Theresa Kveton; Colton Kveton and Cade Kveton; and Kale Koopmann as well as 18 great-grandchildren (with 2 more on the way). Her nine grandsons will serve as pall bearers. She is also survived by her sisters Lucy Drymala (and husband Joe), Margaret Vacek, and Dolores Luchak. In lieu of flowers, please consider planting a tree in Sophia's memory and watch it grow; or put a birdfeeder near your window and enjoy the sights and sounds that gave her such delight! Funeral services will be held in Comfort, Texas on Friday October 13, 2023. The family will welcome you for visitation at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, followed by a rosary at 11:30. The funeral mass will be celebrated at noon, with interment immediately following at Comfort Cemetery.
