Margaret Killough, daughter of William Keeler was born Ballymonie, County Antrim, Ireland in 1836. Her family relocated to Nova Scotia, Canada between 1842 and 1853. She was married to Robert Durnford in October, 1855 at Gays River, Nova Scotia until his passing in 1867 at Lower Stewiacke, Nova Scotia leaving her with four sons aged 5 weeks to 8 years. She immigrated to America by boat from Nova Scotia, Canada to California, United States arriving in 1869. She is listed in the 1870 United States census as living in Eureka Township, Humboldt County with her sons, brothers Robert Killough and John Killough, and brother-in-law Thomas Durnford. Margaret Killough operated the Table Bluff Hotel for several years and married Addison McLean in 1873 at Eureka. They relocated to Blocksburg, California and operated the Overland Hotel there until approximately 1907 having sold the property to retire to Eureka. August 16, 1909: Margaret McLean died in the home of her son, John K. Durnford, 1013 F Street Eureka, Humboldt County, California at 5 am, Monday, August 16, 1909 due to pulmonary edema. She is buried at Myrtle Grove Cemetery, Eureka, Humboldt County, California, Section A, Row 4, plot 12. PIONEER LADY IS CALLED (Humboldt Times, Volume XLVI, Number 174, 17 August 1909) Yesterday morning at 8 o'clock Mrs. Elizabeth McLean, an elderly lady of this city, passed away at her home on F street, the cause of her demise being the infirmities coincident to a long and useful life. The lady was a native of Nova Scotia, aged 73 years. Mrs. McLean had resided in this county for many years having for some time been a resident of this city, and before coming here, was a resident of Blocksburg. Mrs. McLean has been a resident of this county for 48 years. Four grown sons, Thomas Durnford of San Francisco, Ernest and Robert Durnford of Blocksburg and John K. Durnford of this city, and a husband, Pioneer Addison McLean, are the members of the immediate family who mourn the passing of the aged lady. John Killor of this city and Robert Killor of Seattle are brothers of Mrs. McLean. The funeral will be held tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock from the home on F street and interment will take place at Myrtle Grove cemetery. Rev. John T. Shurtleff will conduct the services.
