Published in the Athens Review December 27, 1934 W.F. Welch, affectionately known to Review readers as "Uncle Dick", passed away at the family home in Cross Roads Saturday morning at 7:30. His death came as a distinct shock to his family as he was well and hearty the day previous and had spent the entire day in town. He passed away while asleep. Funeral services were held at Beck's Chapel cemetery at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. A.D. Carter, Methodist minister of Post Oak. "Uncle Dick" would have been 85 years of age in April. He had a severe spell early this year and was confined to his home for many weeks. Recently however, he had seemed to fully recover and was able to greet his friends in town again. Born in Mississippi, he came to Texas sixty-five years ago and settled in the Cross Roads section of this county where he had continuously resided since. For years he had served as the Review's correspondent at Cross Roads and was the Dean of the present staff of correspondents. His services with the paper ante-dated that of the present publishers. His weekly letters were looked forward to by many readers of the Review and were always closed with a verse of scripture. On his infrequent visits to the Review he was always in splendid humor and his ever ready wit served to cheer us up. "Uncle Dick" was a faithful member of the Methodist church, having united with that denomination early in life. He is survived by ten children, numerous grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. The surviving children are: Henry, I.B., Paul, Jim and Bishop Welch; Mrs. J.D. Goodgame, Mrs. Willie Brown, Mrs. Charlie Simmons and Mrs. Alma Fade. Coming to this section when it was little more than a primitive country, "Uncle Dick" was among the pioneers who blazed the way in East Texas. He lived a useful life, reared a family of honorable children and his going leaves a place that will be difficult to fill.
