Retired Judge Ben Sasin 1943-2023 Retired Judge Ben Sasin, 80, passed away Friday, August 4, 2023, surrounded by his family. He was born on May 12, 1943, in Roscoe, Texas to Adolf Sasin and Francis (Kresta) Sasin. He attended Roscoe School, marrying his high school sweetheart, Betty Gray, on July 19, 1960. He began his career working for the Roscoe, Snyder & Pacific Railroad starting out as a supervisor and later becoming an engineer. During this time and throughout the remainder of his life, he also farmed cotton and milo crops. He began his public service in 1984 becoming a jailer for the Nolan County Sheriff's Department, later serving as a Deputy Sheriff and Criminal Investigator. He used his vast knowledge of local government and dedication to public service to later become the Justice of the Peace in Sweetwater, Texas and retired as the Municipal Judge for the City of Weatherford. Ben married Suzie Merkley on October 25, 2003, at the Parker County Courthouse in Weatherford, Texas. In 2006, he had the pleasure of swearing in Suzie as Parker County Justice of the Peace to begin her sixth term and 20th year of service. He will be remembered as a dedicated and accomplished leader for his contributions to his professional community. His warm presence and smile will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and colleagues. His memory will be cherished by all who knew him, and his legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched. Ben is survived by his wife, Suzie Merkley-Sasin; his daughters, Lori Hobbs and Jamie Maloney; stepson, Matthew Merkley; grandchildren, Lindsay Hobbs-Willis and David Hobbs; and step-grandchildren, Keilee Merkley and Crosby Merkley. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, George Sasin and Bill Sasin and sister, Georgia Chandler. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, August 18, 2023, at Galbreaith Pickard Funeral Chapel, 913 North Elm Street, Weatherford, Texas 76086, officiated by Charles Wetherbee. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Parkinson's Foundation, Van Andel Institute or The Michael J. Fox Foundation to further research for a cure.
