Bio

Charles Wesley Kennedy was born on July 18,1936, to Richard and Alice (Todd) Kennedy in Alliance, Nebraska. He passed away peacefully on August 2, 2023, having recently celebrated his 87th birthday. Charles lived much of his younger years in Red Mountain, California, attending nearby Randsburg schools. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in his senior year, serving in the Army Security Agency as a Cryptographer, before returning home to marry his high school sweetheart, Susie Ellen Pryor. Their daughter, Kirby, was born in Fort Huachuca, Arizona, near the end of his service, followed a few years later by daughter, Kelly, in Kingman, Arizona. Seven years later, Charles and Susie added an adopted son, David, and the family was complete. Charles and Susie both came from large families and shared an inherited love of music. They both loved to sing with Charles on guitar or bass and Susie on piano or drums. On July 20, 1969, the day man walked on the moon, Charles was injured in an explosion while working in a chemical plant, and eventually losing his right arm and part of his left hand. He was a hard working and resilient man and never let his injury keep him from doing things any two-handed person could do, including relearning to play the bass with one hand. Charles always said he was the straight man to Susie's quick wit, but in truth, he was very funny in his own right. Prior to Susie's death in 2007, they could often be overheard whispering and giggling to themselves over some inside joke born of 50 years together. Along with his love of music, and his family, he enjoyed vacations, playing cards, family reunions, reading, and after retirement, "puttering" as Susie called it. He loved well and was well loved. He will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Don, Maurice, Eugene, James, and Robert; sister Sharon; beloved wife Susie; daughter Kirby; and son David. As he requested, there will be no formal service, but gravestones will be placed in Porum, Oklahoma and Johannesburg, California next to his soulmate, Susie.
