Bio

Loice Kendrick passed away April 16, 2024, at her home in Haynesville, Louisiana. A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, April 20, 2024, at the Bailey Funeral Home in Haynesville. Visitation is at 2:00 p.m. followed by a service in the chapel at 3:00 p.m. Interment will be in the Old Town Cemetery under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Haynesville, LA. A reception will be held at the Country Club of Haynesville after the service. She is survived by her four children: Peggy Stemmans and husband Mike, Ronnie Kendrick and wife Eileen, Terry Kendrick and wife Tina, and Don Kendrick and wife Cathy. She is also survived by ten grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, and one great- great grandchild. Our mother was born in 1925 in West Texas. She grew up during the Great Depression where the lessons of conservation and self-sufficiency were instilled in her for life. She met our father during World War II in Fort Worth, Texas. She and her sister Nell were working there in an airplane factory. Dad was her supervisor. Their courtship was brief, possibly because of the war's urgency. Dad brought her to Haynesville at Christmas in 1944 and they were married in his parents' living room. After the war's end they moved to Haynesville and built a house next door to her in-laws. Except for a few years in Magnolia, Arkansas, she lived the rest of her life in this home. When her youngest child started school, she went to work at Becton Dickinson, the glove plant in Haynesville, as a cost accountant. When Dad retired, they decided she should as well, although she was ten years younger than he. In retirement Mother found her passion, something she had loved as a child in West Texas: Nature. She joined the Audubon Society; she became a Master Gardener. She began teaching at ecology camp in Arkansas, a camp that several of her grandchildren attended. She started an ecological festival: The Celebration of Butterflies in Haynesville, now in its 25th year. She wrote a book about gardening to attract butterflies. Then wrote another book about her family in Texas and one more about the Kendrick family. On her computer now is a book of poems she was working on. Our Dad died in 1996. In 2002 Mother married Sterling Lacy, a recent widower from Magnolia, Arkansas. He and his wife had been in the Arkansas Audubon Society where Mother was also a member. She and Sterling took many national and international trips together before Sterling died in 2012. One of the last books Mother published was a history of Haynesville. Its author was a West Texas girl who came to Haynesville in 1944 and stayed. The family wishes to express their deep appreciation for the care provided by Dr. Sam Abshire and Peggy Evans. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Celebration of Butterflies 10021 Hwy. 79 Haynesville, La. 71038 or other charities of one's choosing.
