John E. Cernik, 85, was called home to be with our Lord on March 18, 2008. He was born in Ceresco on the farm to Rose (Citta) Cernik and John Joe Cernik on June 13, 1922. He moved to Omaha, Neb., in 1936. He married his first wife, Mary Jane (Oppfelt), on Oct. 1941, She died in 1975. He was a proud World War II veteran drafted on Nov. 7, 1941. He served as a heavy duty truck driver in the Army Air Force. He received an honorable discharge on Dec. 12, 1945. John was a dedicated worker in Omaha at Armor and spent 31 years as a service representative for Continental Can Company retiring in 1984. He spent his retirement years in Linn Creek, Mo., with his wife Mary Lou (Binkley) Cernik. He leaves behind his wife; sister Valera and Ed Pesek of Valley, Neb.; brother, Dennis and Karen Cernik of Omaha; stepchildren, Steve Gade, Cindy Dingman and spouse, Steve Dingman; and Karen Gade; four grandsons, Wesley Gade, Matt Gade, Justin Gade and Ryan Dingman; along with nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Rose (Citta) Cernik; father, John Joe Cernik; first wife, Mary Jane (Oppfelt) Cernik; sister, Rose (Cernik) Baker; and brother- Stanley Cernik. John will be remembered as a humorous man, who enjoyed fishing, gardening, horseshoes and bowling. He shared his knowledge and skill of fishing with his grandsons.
