Zelma "Sally" Penner, 85, homemaker and retail salesperson, died Monday (Feb. 23, 2004) at Kidron Bethel Health Care in North Newton. She was born July 21, 1918, to Gerhard George and Susanna Blinn (Penner) Goertzen in Henderson, Neb. They preceded her in death. She married Wilbert Penner Jan. 3, 1945, in Alexandria, Va. He preceded her in death. She had a very gregarious personality and never met a stranger. She enjoyed cooking and crocheting, gardening and reading. She was a person of faith and her family was very important to her. She was a member of Bethel College Mennonite Church in North Newton. Survivors include: two daughters, Barbara Esau and husband Robert of Beatrice, Neb., and Patricia Hinds and husband Ronnie of Bozeman, Mont.; a son, Douglas Penner and wife Raylene (Hinz) of Topeka; a sister, Matilda Braun and husband Calvin of Keizer, Ore.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday with family greeting friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Petersen Funeral Home. Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Greenwood Cemetery. Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Bethel College Mennonite Church with Pastors Heidi Regier Kreider and Norma Johnson officiating. Memorials have been established with Bethel College Mennonite Church and Kidron Bethel Retirement Service, both in care of the funeral home.
