October 28, 1965 – Girl Killed in Traffic Washburn – A Girl Scout marshmallow roast ended in tragedy here Wednesday evening when one of the scouts dashed in front of a car and was killed. Marie Jane Harmon, 10, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Harmon, 314 3rds St. in Washburn, was dead on arrival at Scholtz Hospital in Waterloo. She was struck by a car driven by Virgil D. Clark, 45, of 2903 Roland St., Waterloo, in the 3700 block of La Porte Rd., at the south edge of Washburn. - At Scout Cookout – According to the Iowa Highway Patrol, the girl was part of a troop of 23 Girl Scouts who were having a cookout across La Porte Rd from the home of their leader, Mrs. H.D. Shrimp. - Tells of Darting – Mrs. Shrimp told authorities that three or four of the girls darted onto the highway to go to her home. Clark apparently tried to avoid the children but was unable to miss the Harmon girl. He was traveling north when the accident occurred, at 6:15 pm. - Services Pending- Services are pending at the Chapel of Memories West for Marie Jane Harmon.
